Meshtastic
Meshtastic is an open-source project that enables the creation of a decentralized, license-free wireless network for long-distance communication. It uses LoRa (Long Range) radio modules to send messages between devices without requiring an internet or cellular connection.
Main features of Meshtastic:
- Mesh network: Messages are forwarded from device to device to increase range.
- License-free: Uses license-free frequency bands (e.g. 868 MHz in Europe or 915 MHz in the USA).
- Long range: Depending on the environment and antenna, several kilometers can be covered.
- Low power consumption: Devices can run for days or even weeks on a single battery charge.
- Smartphone integration: Connection via Bluetooth with an app (Android & iOS) for easy operation.
- Encryption: Messages can be encrypted to protect privacy.
- Open source: Hardware and software are open source and can be customized.
Possible uses:
- Outdoor adventures & emergency communications (hiking, camping, disaster relief)
- Communication in remote areas without a mobile network
- Protests or crisis areas for independent communication
- IoT applications (e.g. sensor data transmission)
Meshtastic is often used with devices like the LILYGO T-Echo or Heltec LoRa ESP32 .
